RMSA Dance Class Descriptions

2018-2019

Rocky Mountain School of the Arts DANCE offers a variety of dance classes for all ages and experience levels.

Our classes are grouped into 4 different categories;

  • Early Childhood
  • Youth
  • Advance Dance
  • Older Beginner/Recreational Dance

Disciplines include:

  • hip hop
  • contemporary

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Preschool | 45 minutes per week Tuesdays 1:30-2:15* OR Wednesdays 3:45-4:30

RMSA’s Preschool Dance class is a fun, all-around introduction to dance for 3-4 year olds. Children in this class develop locomotor skills and learn how to behave in the structured environment of dance classes.
  • 30 minutes for ballet/creative movement
  • 15 minutes for tap/rhythm
The Preschool Dance class performs in one show of RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $65).   *2nd class is pending till minimum class size is filled. Wednesday's class has a waiting list and depending on schedules & the group availability a different day or time in the early afternoon could work for a 2nd class. Kindergarten | 45 minutes per week Wednesdays 4:30-5:15

RMSA's Kindergarten Dance class is a fun, engaging class where children are introduced to patterns in dance and music, simple ballet sequences, and dance vocabulary.
  • 30 minutes for ballet/creative movement
  • 15 minutes for tap/rhythm
The Kindergarten Dance class performs in one show of RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $65). Register

 

YOUTH DANCE

Academy 1 | 1 3/4 hours per week

  • Tuesdays 3:45-4:15 Ballet, 4:15-4:45 Tap
  • Wednesday's 4:00-4:45 Jazz & Hip Hop

Academy 1 is designed for 1st grader beginner dancers. The Academy program offers students four different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. It is recommended that students do participate in all four as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the opportunity to see which styles suite their abilities, but it is not mandatory to participate in all styles. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation.

  • Performances:
    • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production.  (purchase of 3 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, and jazz/tap -share a costume), approximately $65 per costume).
    • Academy Jazz students have 3 additional Christmas performances that they do in the community (costumes provided).

Academy 1B | 1 and ¾ hours per week

  • Tuesdays 3:45-4:15 Tap; 4:15-4:45 Ballet
  • Wednesdays 4:45-5:30 Jazz and Hip Hop

Academy 1B is designed for 1st or 2nd grade beginner dancers, with 1-2 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student).

The Academy program offers students four different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. It is recommended that students do participate in all four as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the opportunity to see which styles suite their abilities, but it is not mandatory to participate in all styles. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation.

Academy 2 | 2 hours per week

  • Tuesday 4:00-4:45 Jazz and Hip Hop
  • Thursday 4:00-4:45 Ballet, 4:45-5:15 Tap

Academy 2 is designed for 2nd or 3rd grade intermediate dancers, with 3 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student).

The Academy program offers students four different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop; 30 minutes each. It is recommended that students do participate in all four as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the opportunity to see which styles suite their abilities, but it is not mandatory to participate in all styles. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation.

  • Performances:
    • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production.  (purchase of 3 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, and jazz/tap -share a costume), approximately $65 per costume).

Academy 3 | 4 hours per

  • Tuesdays 4:45-5:30 Ballet, 5:45-6:15 Hip Hop, 6:15-6:45 Tap
  • Wednesdays 4:00-4:45 Ballet, 4:45-5:15 Contemporary, 5:30-6:15 Jazz (may only participate if registered for Tuesday ballet class)

This Academy is designed for 3rd to 5th grade intermediate dancers, with 3-6 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student). Students spend approximately two years in Academy 3.

This Academy program offers students five disciplines: Ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, and they start contemporary. It is recommended but not mandatory that students do participate in all five as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes. Please note: If students do not take the 2nd Ballet class, they will not be able to continue at the Academy levels in ballet as they will not be able to keep up with the students participating in the 2 ballet classes.

  • Performances:
    • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production. (purchase of 4 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz/tap-share a costume, approximately $65-$75 per costume).
    • Academy Jazz students have 3 additional Christmas performances that they do in the community (costumes provided).

Academy 4 | 3 3/4 hours per week

  • Tuesdays 4:45-5:30 Jazz, 5:30-6:15 Ballet, 6:15-6:45 Tap
  • Thursday 4:00-4:45 Ballet (may only participate if registered for Tuesday ballet class), 4:45-5:30 Contemporary, 5:30-6:00 Hip Hop

Academy 4 is designed for children 9 years and older with 5-7 years of dance experience. Each student is evaluated individually for Academy 4, as these guidelines differ for each student.  Students spend approximately two years in Academy 4. This Academy is for the more serious dancer and is the final level offered to dancers before they move into advanced placement.  Dancers who do not wish or are unable to move into advanced placement classes can move into our recreational dance classes as an alternative.

This Academy program offers students five dance disciplines: Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap. It is recommended but not mandatory that students do participate in all five classes as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes. Students may take classes in ballet, pointe (through recommendation or audition only), tap, jazz, hip hop, or contemporary singularly or they may participate in the academy program in which all five disciplines are offered at a discounted rate.

  • Performances:
    • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production. (purchase of 4 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz/tap-share a costume, approximately $65-$75 per costume).
    • Academy 4 Jazz students perform 3-5 performances throughout the year, including Christmas performances (costumes provided) and Swing into Spring performances (uses costumes for Spring Production).

Dancers in their 2nd year of Academy 4 are eligible to audition for RMDT’s Spring Company.

ADVANCED DANCE

Academy 5 | 5 ½+ hours per week

  • Tuesdays 5:30-6:30 Ballet, 6:45-7:30 Tap
  • Wednesdays 5:15-6:30 Ballet and Pointe
  • Thursdays 4:45-5:45 Contemporary, 6:00-6:45 Jazz, 6:45-7:30 Hip Hop
Academy 5 is for the serious dancer only and acceptance is based on a student’s knowledge both physically and mentally, along technical foundation.  Students must be at least 10 years and older with four years of ballet training and four years of jazz or hip hop, and two years contemporary experience.  A trial class is required before registration is accepted. Although student’s class choices can be customized, it is required that students participate in the majority of classes offered. Dancers in Academy 5 are required to audition for Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Spring Company, Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s annual Nutcracker Production, and Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Wild West Show. Dancers also have the option to attend RMDT’s New York Dance Experience every other year. Register

Academy 7 | 7+ hours per week

  • Tuesdays 6:15-7:30 Ballet, 7:30-8:15 Hip Hop
  • Wednesdays 6:30-7:45 Contemporary; 7:45-8:15 Jumps & Turns (2 times a month)
  • Thursdays 5:45-7:30 Ballet and Pointe, 7:30-8:15 Tap
Academy 7 is offered by audition only. Please see academy 5 requirements to see if you are eligible for Academy 7 classes.  Please contact the studio to set up a meeting time if you are interested in registering for classes of this level. Register

OLDER BEGINNER/ RECREATIONAL DANCE

  • Jazz/Hip Hop: Wednesdays 6:30-7:15
  • Contemporary: Wednesdays 7:15-8:00
At RMSA, we believe you’re never too old to discover the joy of dance. RMSA’s Older Beginner/Recreational dance classes offer quality training in several dance styles either for beginners 9-16 years old who have had little or no dance training as young children OR those dancers who do not wish to commit to RMSA advanced placement classes but still wish to dance.

    • Jazz, Hip Hop, and Contemporary classes perform in RMSA’s annual Spring Production. (purchase of 3 costumes required for hip hop, contemporary, and jazz; approximately $65-$75 per costume).
