Class Descriptions


RMSA offers a variety of dance classes for all ages and experience levels. Disciplines include ballet, contemporary, tap, jazz, and hip hop. Please see descriptions below before registering. Contact the studio for further details.

Early Childhood Dance

Preschool Dance | 45 minutes per week
Wednesdays 3:45-4:30

With 30 minutes dedicated to ballet/creative movement and 15 minutes to tap/rhythm, RMSA’s Preschool Dance is a fun, all-around introduction to dance for 3-4 year olds. Children in the Preschool Dance class develop locomotor skills and learn how to behave in the structured environment of dance classes. The Preschool Dance class performs in RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $65).

Kindergarten Dance | 45 minutes per week
Wednesdays 4:30-5:15

In the weekly Kindergarten Dance class, 30 minutes are dedicated to ballet/creative movement and 15 minutes to tap/rhythm. Children are introduced to patterns in dance and music, simple ballet sequences, and vocabulary. The Kindergarten Dance class performs in RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $65).

Youth Dance

Academy 1 | 1 3/4 hours per week
Wednesdays 3:45-4:30 Jazz and Hip Hop
Thursdays 3:45-4:15 Ballet, 4:15-4:45 Tap 

Each week, Academy 1 students spend 30 minutes learning ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. Although dancers are encouraged to take all three classes offered, it is not mandatory.  Ballet training is highly recommended to build foundation. Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required for ballet, hip hop, and jazz/tap, approximately $65 per costume). In addition to the Spring Production, Academy Jazz students perform 3-5 performances throughout the year, including Christmas performances (costumes provided) and Swing into Spring performances (uses costume for Spring Production).

Academy 1B | 1 and ¾ hours per week
Tuesdays 4:00-4:45 Jazz and Hip Hop
Thursdays 3:45-4:15 tap, 4:15-4:45 ballet 

Academy 1B is designed for 1st or 2nd grade beginner dancers, with 1-2 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student). Ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop classes are offered. The Academy program offers students four disciplines, and is recommended that students do participate in all four as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the opportunity to see which style suite their abilities, but it is not mandatory to participate in all styles.  Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required for ballet, hip hop, and jazz/tap (jazz and tap share the same costume) approximately $65 per costume). In addition to the Spring Production, Academy Jazz students perform 3-5 performances throughout the year, including Christmas performances (costumes provided) and Swing into Spring performances (uses costume for Spring Production).

Academy 3 | 4 hours per week

Wednesdays 4:30-5:15 Jazz, 5:15-6:00 Ballet (may only participate if registered for Tuesday ballet class), 6:00-6:30 Hip Hop

Students spend approximately two years in Academy 3.  This Academy is designed for 3rd to 5th grade intermediate dancers, with 3-6 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student). Ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, and hip hop classes are offered singularly. The Academy program offers students five disciplines, and is recommended that students do participate in all five as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes.  Participation in all classes is recommended, but is not mandatory.  Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required for ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz/tap (jazz and tap share the same costume) approximately $65-$75 per costume). In addition to the Spring Production, Academy Jazz students perform 3-5 performances throughout the year, including Christmas performances (costumes provided) and Swing into Spring performances (uses costume for Spring Production).

Academy 4 | 5 hours per week

Wednesdays 5:15-6:15 ballet and pointe, 6:15-7:00 tap
Thursdays 4:45-5:45 ballet, 5:45-6:30 jazz

Students spend approximately two years in Academy 4.  Academy 4 is designed for children 9 years and older with 5-7 years of dance experience. Each student is evaluated individually for Academy 4, as these guidelines differ for each student.  Academy 4 is for the more serious dancer and is the final level offered to dancers before they move into advanced placement.  Dancers who do not wish or are unable to move into advanced placement classes can move into our recreational dance classes as an alternative.   This Academy program offers students five disciplines, and is recommended that students do participate in all five as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes.  Participation in all classes is recommended, but is not mandatory.  Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required for ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz/tap (jazz and tap share the same costume) approximately $65-$75 per costume). In addition to the Spring Production, Academy Jazz students perform 3-5 performances throughout the year, including Christmas performances (costumes provided) and Swing into Spring performances (uses costume for Spring Production).

Students may take classes in ballet, pointe (through recommendation or audition only), tap, jazz, hip hop, or contemporary singularly or they may participate in the academy program in which all five disciplines are offered at a discounted rate.

Dancers in their 2nd year of Academy 4 are eligible to audition for RMDT’s Spring Company.

Advanced Dance

Academy 5 | 5 ½+ hours per week

Academy 5 is for the serious dancer only and acceptance is based on a student’s knowledge both physically and mentally, along technical foundation.  Students must be at least 10 years and older with four years of ballet training and four years of jazz or hip hop, and two years contemporary experience.  A trial class is required before registration is accepted. Although student’s class choices can be customized, it is required that students participate in the majority of classes offered. 

Dancers in Academy 5 are required to audition for Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Spring Company, Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s annual Nutcracker Production, and Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Wild West Show. 

Dancers also have the option to attend RMDT’s New York Dance Experience every other year.

Academy 7 is offered by audition only. Please see academy 5 requirements to see if you are eligible for Academy 7 classes.  Please contact the studio to set up a meeting time if you are interested in registering for classes of this level.

Older Beginners Dance and Recreational Dance

RMSA’s Older Beginner classes offer quality training in several dance styles for beginners 9-16 years old. These classes are designed for those who had little or no dance training as young children. At RMSA we believe you’re never too old to discover the joy of dance.

RMSA’s Recreational Dance classes offer quality training in several dance styles for those dancers who do not wish to commit to advanced placement classes or performance requirements, but still wish to dance.

Ballet | 45 minutes per week
